According to the authentic old legends on versos of their backings, these miniatures are the portraits of Franz Wilhelm Hofmann and his wife Mathilde Hofmannn, nee Singer. We acquired them together with another miniature portrait (painted by another artist; see our web # 29353), which shows the same man at the age of 18. The birth year of this man (indicated on verso) is 1804. The attire and, especially, hairstyle of the married couple speak for the period between 1825 and 1830.

The husband is probably ident with well-known Austrian agricultural expert of mid 19th century, Friedrich Wilhelm Hofmann (see our image nr.17).

According to Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (his email of April 28 2010), the author of this pair could very likely be Bohemian (Czech) miniaturist of the turn of 19th century, Antonin Bayer.

Antonin (Anton) Bayer was born in 1768 in Tannenberg (Svatá Anna / Böhmerwald) and died in 1833 in Prague. He studied from 1801 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and lived mainly in this city, with interruptions for Budapest (1821-23) and Vienna (ca. 1825). His clientele generally included members of aristocracy (especially families Thun and Nostitz) and artists.

We are very grateful to our friend, world's best specialist in portrait miniatures Dr. Hofstetter for his generous help.
