Monogrammed with ligated "LC", this miniature portrait of a still anonymous aristocratic lady (her dress and hairstyle speak for ca, 1700) is a typical work of well-known London, turn of 18th century miniaturist Peter (Lawrence) Cross (see our comparison images nr.7-11).
As Daphne Foskett says "it is now believed that Lawrence and Peter Cross (also Crosse) is one and the same person" (probably his first name contained both names - Peter Lawrence).
He was born ca. 1645 probably in London and died in that city in 1724. His father Anthony Cross was a fabric seller of French origin (he died in 1651/52). Some biographers suppose he took lessons with Samuel Cooper; in each case his works strongly resemble those of the latter. Sometimes he is even called the second English miniaturist after Cooper. For his extensive biography see our images nr. 12-13.
