Executed in the late 1790s (according to the lady's dress), it is a miniature portrait of adult woman posing by a flower vase. The miniature bears on verso an old, authentic legend informing of the sitter's identity.
The woman's birth name was Magdeleine Voron. She was baptized in Lyon on October 8, 1761 (in our portrait, she is ca 35/40 years of age). Her father was a Lyon "marchand drapier" (textile merchant) by the name NoŽl Voron; her mother's name was Magdeleine Reverchon. The family lived in Lyon, on rue des Farges, quartier de Saint-Just.
On August 15, 1787 (by then, she was already 26), Magdeleine married Mathieu Layat (1757-1829) - a house owner and merchant from Lyon. She gave birth to five children (her youngest child (daughter) Euphrasie was born in 1803).
Magdeleine Layat-Voron died in Lyon on January 26, 1844 at the age of 82. She outlived her husband by almost fifteen years.

This miniature could very well be a work of the miniaturist Dominique Perignon, who - as it is known - was working in Lyon between 1787 and 1805 (see our web #40150).

According to Mme Lemoine-Bouchard, miniaturist Dominique Perignon was a Protestant living in Lyon. There, he married certain Anne Merot and had two daughters with her (one born in 1802 and second - in 1805). In 1802, the family lived on 33, rue Lanterne and, in 1805, on 82, rue de l'abre sec in Lyon.
