Johann Peter Hasenclever (1810-1853), "Sentimental", Oil on Canvas, 1846/47 Price: 25000 EUR / DISCOUNT PRICE= 25000 USD The "Sentimental" is undoubtedly the most significant creation of Johann Peter Hasenclever, student of Professor Schadow at the Duesseldorf Academy. The charming and alluring composition of this painting was actually meant as a parody of the Duesseldorf school's unrealistic and sentimental tendencies, but the magnificent arrangement with the girl longing for her beloved in the moonlight doesn't miss its effect making the painting one of the most beautiful pieces of Hasenclever's entire work. Hasenclever had the habit of painting many versions of the same picture. Therefore it is not surprising that he also did so with the "Sentimental" . Knut Soine mentions in his catalogue of works Hasenclever's two versions of this painting housed at the Art Museum of Duesseldorf and at the Heimatmuseum Remscheid. Both of these paintings are dated 1846, but no date can be found on our version. Therefore this version would be more likely to be identical with the undated painting "Sentimental" listed by Boetticher, exhibited in 1847 at the Kunstverein (Art Union) of Luebeck (Boetticher No.24). Professor Helmut Boersch-Supan has confirmed, that the work in question is a version of Hasenclever's "Sentimental" made by the artist's own hand (expertise from March 21, 2001).
Johan Peter Hasenclever (1810 Remscheid - 1853 Dusseldorf) at first began his studies as a student of architecture at the Dusseldorfer Academy, proceeding to study painting at the studio of Wilhelm Schadow. As his teacher was unimpressed with Hasenclever's mythological and historical compositions, the artist left Schadow's studio and returned to his native Remscheid, where he for sometime was active as a portraitist. Nevertheless, in a while, he came back to Dusseldorf, where in 1833 he exhibited a small genre painting that was acquired by Rheinischen Kunstverein. That was how the artist learned that it was the genre painting that would eventually lead him to success. In 1838 he travelled to Munich for further studies; from 1840 to 1842 lived in Upper Italy, returning to Dusseldorf, where he then remained until his death. Works by Hasenclever belong to the finest German and international museum collections (Dusseldorf, Berlin, Elberfeld, Munster, Munich, Amsterdam, Riga, etc.).
