Rare for the current antique market original oil painting by well-known Polish female artist of the late-19th - early-20th-centuries, Zofia Stankiewicz.

In this, painted at the turn of the 20th century, early work she showed an old shtetl Jew rushing at dawn to the market, possibly in Shtetl Radomysl by Zhitomir, Ukraine (two thirds of its environs were Jewish; Zofia Stankiewicz was born in 1862 in village Ryznia by Radomysl and was growing up neighbored by Jews).
As a young girl she moved to Ukrainian city Kharkov and spent some time there attending the painting school of Yegor Yegorovich Schreider, well-known Russian-Ukrainian landscape painter.
In 1878 she came to Warsaw and for two years studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under W. Gerson. From 1880 she attended Julian Academy in Paris for a few years. There she studied under Tony Robert-Fleury, Jean-Paul Laurens and William Adolphe Bouguerau.
After returning to Warsaw she also attended studios of Milosz Kotarbinski, Konrad Krzyzanowski and Kazimierz Stabrowski.
She mainly lived in Warsaw and, in her early period, chiefly painted landscapes (often of Ukraine) and still-lives; later on she became a graphic artist and illustrator. In her later period she worked as engraver, lithographer and linocut artist, producing views of old Warsaw.
In 1912, together with Ignacy Lopienski, she founded "Towarzystwo Pryjaciol Sztuk Graficznych" (English: Society of Graphic Art). In 1933 she received the Honor Prize of the City of Warsaw.
