Dionys Ganter was born either in 1799 or 1800 in Bubenbach in Schwarzwald (Duchy Baden) and died in 1862 in Freiburg in Breisgau. From 1821 he attended the Vienna Academy: in 1823-1824 - its drawing class, in 1826-1829 - its class of historical painting. After completing his studies he was at first active in his native Bubenbach; from the mid-1830s - in Freiburg in Breisgau (also Duchy Baden). This information indicates that "our" 1827 miniature was made during his Viennese period. And indeed, in this period he painted portraits in style of the English masters, whereas later, in Freiburg, he turned to painting portraits of wealthy farmers, townscapes and church paintings. Works of Dionys Ganter can be viewed at the Augustiner Museum in Freiburg im Breisgau.
