Joseph Hickel "Count Ignác Gyulai as a Lieutenant Colonel", oil on canvas, 1791

Price: 8000  EUR

(please note additional 13% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

This oil-on-canvas portrait displays a superb quality of execution and appears to be the earliest known representation of Count Ignác (Ignaz, Ignatius) Gyulai - celebrated Austrian military officer and member of high Hungarian aristocracy (1763-1831; CLICK HERE). In this 1791 portrait, he is depicted at the age of 29; as we will learn from his biography below, he was then in the rank of a lieutenant colonel of the Austrian Army. Here, he is shown without awards (it is known that he received his first one - the Austrian Maria-Theresian Order - in 1800).
Titled obverse and reverse (the obverse title is accompanied by the sitter's coat-of-arms) this painting also bears on verso (see our image nr.8 ) the artist's own handwritten inscription. It implies that we are dealing here with a very important work of Austria's leading portraitist and court artist of the 2nd half of the 18th century, Joseph Hickel.

Joseph Hickel (1736 Boehmisch-Leipa - 1807 Vienna) was the elder brother of another renowned Austrian artist Anton Hickel. At first pupil of his father, Bohemian painter Hickel (his first name is unknown), from 1766 Hickel visited the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he concentrated on learning the portrait painting. Very soon he became a favourite artist of Maria Theresia, who in 1768 granted him with a scholarship for Italy. The artist made sojourns in Milan, Parma and Florence, where he on Maria Theresia's commission he executed portraits of local nobility. In 1769 Hickel was made a member of the Florentine Academy.
Upon his return to Vienna he was appointed a royal painter (Kammermaler) and, in 1776, was made a member of the Vienna Academy.

Our images nr.17-26 show a number of other works of this artist.
